SRON is the Netherlands Institute for Space Research that develops and makes use of innovative technology for space research, emphasizing on planetary research, earth science research and astrophysical research. With around 200 staff members, the institute has five divisions: Low-energy astrophysics, high-energy astrophysics, sensor development, engineering and earth observation.
SRON is working with a number of research centers and universities to develop robotic sensors, which can be used to perform dike inspections. Robotic sensors can be used to inspect the consistency and condition of dikes, something that is very difficult to do manually.
These robots will work in small groups where each robot works on its own terrain – water, ground and air. This will allow the inspection of the lifesaving dikes to be done more precisely, safely and quickly.
