  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ subsidiary, Ryomei Engineering, together with two Hiroshima based engineering companies, unveiled its quarter of a million dollar robot fish. The robot fish was modelled after a Nishiki Koi carp from where it got its name, and debuted at a pond of the Hiroshima Machinery Works in 2006.

The robot Koi has a white body with few bright red spots. Its tail is capable of making smooth and almost realistic tail movements. It can even do things that a real Koi cannot do, like swimming in reverse and rotates while in place.

Ryomei Engineering, whose feats include the sea bream, a prehistoric coelacanth and the golden carp, aims to use the Nishiki Koi to observe other fishes in the ocean, and to survey the oilrigs and pipes for any damages.

    Features:

    • Installed with a CCD camera on its head
    • Remote controlled
    • Can swim in reverse and can rotate while staying in place
    • Equipped with sensors to monitor water quality
