  • Simplest Passive Dynamic Walker is a 2D robot that is equipped with straight legs along without knees or feet. The simple robot is capable of walking on a tiled slope without using any motors.

In the late 1980’s, Tad McGeer introduced a class of walking robots, called passive dynamic walkers. These robots demonstrate how proper machine design can help in generating stable as well as energy efficient walking. Following the same model, the Delft Biorobotics Lab has created and simulated the Simplest Walker robot.

The dynamics of passive dynamic walkers are extremely simple and can be easily modeled and understood. The most advanced passive walkers have arms and knees, and are capable of walking with an anthropomorphic gait. The development of passive dynamic walkers had a significant influence on the way completely actuated bipedal robots are manufactured as well as controlled.
