In 1998, the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) developed a mobile service robot called WorkPartner. It works interactively with people and is intended for everyday life tasks, which are particularly performed outdoors.

WorkPartner has two human-like hands, enabling it to perform tasks requiring grasping, handling, and manipulation of objects. Locomotion system is by wheels or by legs.

HUT’s mobile service robot is equipped with a vision system that utilizes a camera along with four ultrasonic sensors, a laser scanner, and range sensors. These features allow it to autonomously navigate in a particular location. Its internal programming allows it to learn and accomplish tasks in close cooperation and interaction with its human operator.
