ABB Robotics, founded in 1883, is a world leader in industrial robots, modular manufacturing systems, and autonomous technology. The technologies that have been developed by ABB in their more than a century of operations have transformed entire industries, making modern society possible.
ABB is split up into 5 global divisions:
Power Products: The world’s largest supplier of transformers, and recently developed the highest-voltage direct current transformer ever.
Power Systems: Produces motors, generators, drives, mechanical power transmission, robotics, PLCs, wind converters, solar inverters, voltage regulators, rectifiers, UPS systems, excitation systems, traction converters, fast DC chargers, pioneered HVDC technology nearly 60 years ago.
Discrete Automation and Motion: The world’s largest supplier of industrial electric motors and drives.
Low Voltage Products: Low-voltage circuit breakers, switches, control products, wiring accessories, enclosures and cable systems for both residential homes and industrial buildings. This division ships over 1 million products to customers worldwide every day.
Process Automation: Products, systems and services designed to optimize the productivity of industrial processes. This division delivered the world’s first power-from-shore solution for an offshore rig.
Important Technologies Developed By ABB
HVDC: High voltage direct current (HVDC) has improved the way electrical energy is delivered to consumers, dramatically reducing the number of power losses and mitigating the environmental impact when electricity is transmitted over very long distances.
Variable Speed Drives: Being able t control the speed of electric motors to match the task at hand, saves power and cuts costs in factories, shops, offices and homes.
Industrial Robots: ABB pioneered the world’s first electrically powered industrial robot 40 years ago. Today, more than 160,000 ABB robots are in operation, saving human workers from having to perform incredibly monotonous or dangerous tasks.
