PROFILE

  • The Academic Medical Center (AMC) is one of the eight university medical centers in the Netherlands. Like any medical institution, treatment of patients is the top priority at the AMC. Moreover, the academic centers invest in medical and scientific research and provide education in the medical field. AMC is part of the multiple medical research projects that use technology and robotics to develop new techniques and treatments. A good example of this is project Eye Rhas.

This project deals with the development of a surgical operation robot that can perform certain types of eye surgeries. The robot can be controlled by surgeons, who in turn feel the exact same pressure that the robot forces on the patient. This type of feedback, called haptic feedback, allows the surgeon to have more control. The development of these kinds of instruments can make sure that surgeons work longer, because the steady hand is no longer a prime requisite. This will keep skilled personnel in place, which can also serve as a mentor for young doctors.
