PROFILE

  • Being European Space Agency’s new engineering research laboratory, the ESA Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory aims at performing engineering developments, fundamental research, and project work in human-robot interfaces, haptics & telerobotics together with academic institutions as well as industry.

The laboratory is used for the development of advanced mechatronic devices for haptics and teleoperation for space applications. The ESA Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory conducts studies and researches on how to optimize the software, hardware and control interfaces between various robotic systems and humans, in order to help human operators have more intuitive remote operations.

The laboratory has the goal of building and developing practical end-to-end systems for learning about ways to continuously optimise and improve bilateral control systems as well as their individual components.

Research performed in the laboratory focuses on true ‘human compatibility’, which means that every system is optimized for use by a human operator. Mechatronics and control solutions are targeted towards the optimal support of motor control capabilities, human functionality and anatomy in a remote task.

The Telerobotics & Haptics Laboratory strives to develop advanced technologies to enable future space missions as well as to maintain a strong fundamental research and engineering competence within European Space Agency and its partners.
