PROFILE

  • Established in 1992, the European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) aims at helping the European Union make important decisions by offering detailed analysis of satellite imagery as well as collateral data. The Centre officially joined the European Union in 2002.

Based in Torrejón de Ardoz, it serves as one of the most important institutions for the Security and Defence policy of the European Union. Among all participating institutes, it is the only institute in the field of space. Under the supervision of Mr. Tomaž Lovren?i?, the Centre is managed by geospatial specialists, experienced image analysts as well as supporting personnel from the European Union’s member nations.

In addition to helping the European Union make important decisions about Common Foreign and Security Policy, the Centre particularly helps with ESDP decisions, including EU’s crisis management activities. The Center aims to achieve this goal by offering reliable solutions based on the analysis of satellite imagery as well as collateral data, which includes aerial imagery as well.

The Center also plays an important role in the development of FP7’s TIRAMISU project, providing tools for land impact surveys while participating in user engagement activities like Toolbox Requirements as well as operational validation.
