Exact Dynamics is a company that develops and produces robotic manipulators. The most well-known product of this Dutch robotics company is the iArm. The iArm is a robotic arm that can help people who suffer from a severe loss of motor function in the upper limbs. The arm helps people to regain independency, by helping them to regain successfully the ability to do daily activities that involve arm and hand motions.
Without the assistance of the iArm, a patient had to rely on human help to get a glass of water for example. The iArm gives back the freedom to do this individually. The robotic arm is easily attachable to a person’s wheelchair and since the system is customizable, it can be tailor-made to fit the client’s direst wishes. The DAS robotic arm, for example, is not fully controlled by a person with a keyboard or joystick, but it supports an arm that has lost some of its original function. This means that the person using this device still needs to apply muscle power, but since it is supported, it compensates for the lack of muscle power. The degree of support is easily changeable to keep stimulating the use of muscles.
