PROFILE

  • Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is one of the world’s fastest rising universities today. Established in 1991, Nanyang Technological University was voted world’s number 2 among the young elite universities for two consecutive years. The history of NTU can be traced back to 1981 when the Nanyang Technological Institute was founded. The school then merged with the National Institute of Education and became the NTU in July 1991.

The NTU has various departments and colleges that cater to its more than 33,000 students. But among the notable colleges is its College of Engineering that has honored the school by bagging 14th spot worldwide in the 2013 QS World University Rankings. The college was voted 3rd in the entire Asia region.

The Robotics Research Center (RRC) at NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering has extensively provided students with adequate know-how and experience, especially in the field of robotics and technology. The focus of this lab is to consolidate, emphasize and speed up robotic research activities within the school.

Moreover, it is aiming to bring together researchers and academics in the area of robotics into a more conducive environment equipped with the latest and the most sophisticated research facilities. In order to focus on their chosen field, the RRC is further divided into several research groups including the Underwater Robotics Inspection & Manipulation group.

In this Underwater Robotics Inspection & Manipulation group students and researchers are focused on the design and development of Underwater Robotic Vehicles. Its NTU-RRC Underwater Robotic Vehicle or URV is a hybrid type of vehicle displaying an intelligent remotely operated vehicle with the capability of a semi-autonomous AUV.

This robotic vehicle clearly shows how NTU has excelled over the past few years, especially in the field of robotics.
