Founded in 1434, the University of Catania is an Italian university located in Catania, Italy. With more than 60,000 students, the university is regarded as the one of the oldest universities in the world. The university has a long-term involvement in a number of research programs, both as a partner and/or a coordinator, promoting research activities performed in all departments.
The Department of Electric, Electronic and Computer Engineering in the university, was established in 1971 and has a laboratory, where various prototypes of mobile and service robots have been built and designed. The Service robotic group has performed research activities in the industrial and mobile robotic sectors within a number of national as well as international projects, together with public and private research centres.
The university is also involved in project TIRAMISU. Its main role in the project is to contribute in technical survey development tools and in the development of navigation methods for mobile robots.
