PROFILE

  • Being one of Germany’s premiere public research universities, the University of Jena (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena) was founded in 1558 and is considered as one of the country’s oldest universities. The school at the time of its foundation was already known for its passion for Freiheit (Freedom) and was named after professor Freidrich Schiller, who was part of the school’s teaching staff during those times.

Today, the University of Jena has ten different schools each having its own specialized departments. Moreover, these departments have their own respective facilities, labs and research centers focusing on their respective interest.

Among them is the Jena Locomotion Laboratory in which students and researchers are taught to develop robotic locomotion and movements that are considered vital in increasing the robot’s efficiency, robustness and its usability in an unknown environment.

Some of the robots developed inside the university include the JenaFox walking robot, which was developed to study a robotic system that allows the robot to move around in various environments.
