PROFILE

  • University of Dundee

The University of Dundee was founded in 1881 and in its early existence was a constituent college of the University of St. Andrews together with St. Mary’s College and United College in St. Andrews town. In 1967, the University of Dundee became an independent body but still maintains the heritage and governance structure it once had.

The university is based in Dundee on the east coast of the central lowlands of Scotland. Its main campus is situated in the city’s West End and also houses its affiliates, the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Arts and Design and the Dundee Dental Hospital and School.

From a small beginning, the university now proudly boasts having a significant reputation for students going into their traditional courses like Law, Medicines and Dentistry. Emerging courses like Life Sciences and art are also gaining recognition quickly.

The university has been serious in providing potential students and robot enthusiasts the knowledge they need after they leave the portal of the school. In this regard, the University of Dundee’s School of Engineering, Physics and Mathematics put up the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics. Among its notable research is the Colon Climbing Robot with Internal Support Structure, or simply the CIRWISS.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the design issues associated with the development of a mobile robot capable of traveling along the human colon. This robot is intended to inspect and check the walls of the colon for any cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions.

However, this project is purely novel, and as such the project is aimed to develop an exemplar system that is able to show the viability of these methods. CIRWISS will only have basic inspection capability, but it will eventually lead the way towards the production of a fully functional system with full inspection and intervention functionality.

Another project that the University has developed was made by the university’s School of Computing. Here, with the support Scottish Government Science Engagement Grant and by the University, you can get the opportunity to program your own robot.
