  • Project CLET includes the measurement of plasma in the laser welding process through closed loop control. The project has three main objectives, which are:

    • The development of a sensor system. This sensor should be able to gather radiation that is emitted by the laser during the welding process. Furthermore it is vital that the sensor is able to detect flaws in the welds.
    • The development of a feedback controller. After the development of the sensor system, a closed loop system should be created. This system should be operational within real industrial conditions. Moreover, it should be able to adapt to changing conditions and the laser must be capable on its own to change process settings if needed.
    • To validate the system. To prove it will function in real life situation, the system needs to be tested at a pilot level and subsequently with real life applications.

Studies have shown that the electron temperature is a reliable measurement value for the quality of a weld. This electron temperature has a clear relationship with the penetration depth of the laser, which means that since it can be measured, it can be controlled. The CLET controller has the ability to adapt the laser strength, and thus the depth, while cutting steel, so that it remains equal throughout the entire welding process.
