  • As early as 1995, the Delft bio-robotics laboratory began to develop a bipedal walking robot. This Dutch Robotics research aims to copy the human-like way of walking and running.

The goal is to develop a robot with the ability to achieve a smooth natural walking pattern. This research on the human body in turn could be used to improve rehabilitation with the use of technology.

Since 1995, the project has developed and produced 12 bipedal robots. Phides, their newest creation, is a 2D running robot with actuated hips and knees. The knees of Phides contain a spring in which energy is released to make it function similar to the human knee. This robot has the capability to run at speeds of 1 meter per second.
