  • Robot vision technology has gone through major new developments over the last couple of years, if we take into account what was presented in the latest European exhibitions about robotics. Project “RGBd, TOF,” which stands for Red, Green, Blue (primary colors), d for distance and TOF for Time of Flight camera, thinks it will be possible to insert 3D vision in robots.

    RGB and TOF are now separate techniques, which according to this project team can be combined together. This new link between RGB and 3D will spark an evolution in artificial vision-intelligence to the point that robots no longer have to execute difficult calculations to understand the dimensions of objects. What seems so simple for the human brain needs a large sequence of steps in the system of a robot to understand the 3D world. The most recent cameras of this project use near-infrared light, which gives the robot 4 important ranges of vectors and coordinates about its environment.

    The main goal of this new technology is to get one step closer to letting robots function with great similarity to their human counterparts.
