Despite his works on numerous androids and humanoid robots, James Bruton did not cease his fervent efforts in creating a robot that is unique from others. He created an entirely different prototype that capitalized on the use of lightweight materials and low-power actuators. The result of these efforts is the Android 9, also known as Featherweight.

Android 9 has a body that is built mainly from balsa wood, with aluminum used to provide support in some parts. Motors like Tamiya 70093 3-Speed Crank-Axle Gearboxes are used for the hips, allowing the robot to lean side-wards. The Tamiya 72004 Worm Gear Gearboxes are used for its legs.
