Toshiba wanted to create a robot that would be easy to communicate with. Researchers in its R&D department developed a newer and smaller version of their previous ApriPoco robot, the ApriPetit. This cute little robot is only six inches tall and is part of the Japanese company’s Advanced Personal Robots with Intelligence project.

The ApriPetit was designed with older people in mind, as its developers were looking for ways to help these folks with daily routines. Using its expressive eyes, this Japanese robot can follow a user across the room and ask basic and simple questions related, but not limited, to his or her health.

This portable robot is capable of understanding and acting on voice commands with the use of speech recognition and text-to-speech software. With its eyes, which are actually stereo cameras, this robot can find and recognize faces, and determine their distance. Although this Japanese robot is not yet available for purchase on the market, Toshiba hopes to make ApriPetit a household name someday.
