DEXTER
The University of Massachusetts developed a dynamically balancing robot called DEXTER. Unlike other biped robots that walk stiffly and have a pre-planned set of motions, Dexter dynamically adjusts itself with air cylinders that drive its joints. This allows its joints to act like springs, similar to our own muscles.
Dexter does not have a stable stance, so it has to keep its balance the way we do. Because it has no pre-programmed walking motion, Dexter has to learn how to walk. This allows it to have wide range of walking abilities. Currently, Dexter’s walking is a little stiff, but given a few more years, this robot can and will eventually perfect its motion.
