Short for 'Home Exploring Robotic Butler', HERB is the brainchild of Intel’s research laboratory, creating a robot that can fetch drinks, get some chips and even wash dishes. This autonomous robot can perform useful manipulation jobs inside your home.

With new algorithms, it can search for things, learn how to navigate inside a cluttered home, recognize and register objects accurately, open doors and hold objects with its caging grasps. It is also capable of planning its grasp.

To help it navigate, a camera is installed, aside from the spinning laser attached on its head, in order for this butler robot to “see” and avoid any obstacles. To command this autonomous personal robot, Intel installed voice recognition capabilities allowing it to follow any orders its owner may want to give.

HERB can also be controlled using an iPhone interface. Intel said that this robot is part of their plan to improve and create adaptive algorithms for navigation and object manipulation in very dynamic and ever-changing environs.
