  • University of Genoa’s LIRA Laboratory created a humanoid robot called James that has 23 degrees of freedom. It is very flexible and can even grasp an object in a pre-programmed position.

This humanoid robot’s head and upper torso were customized and designed at the LIRA laboratory. This robot was mounted with cameras that serve as its eyes and two microphones that act like ears. Gyroscopes to copy human vestibular systems are also present. Positional encoders at each joint, together with some force and tactile sensors, allow this humanoid babybot to be very flexible and act almost human.

Its purpose is to uncover the mechanism behind the function of the brain. To do this, LIRA built physical models of the neural control and cognitive structures. Through this research, the team wants the robot to possess behaviour like controlling eye movements.

    JAMES Features:

    • PUMA Manipulator
    • Rotating torso
    • Cameras
    • Two microphones
    • Three gyroscopes
    • Torque/force sensors
    • Tactile sensors
