  • University of Oxford’s Oxford Mobile Robotics created a robot called the Marge robot. It has been installed with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) reading software. With it, scientists hope to develop literate artificial intelligence considering that computers are already able to turn scanned books into text.

Marge, the reading robot, is also equipped with a dictionary and a spellchecker allowing it to interpret text and check words that are not spelled or written correctly. With this technology, this robot is able to read a word that it gets from the web and even look at its context for its meaning. With the software, the Marge robot can also read a newspaper.

Marge’s artificial intelligence comes from the installed software and not from its hardware. This allows scientists to utilize the software for other devices and not just for humanoid robots.
