Yale University scientists, Kevin Gold and Brian Scassellati, created a humanoid robot called the NICO. This upper-torso robot has appendages and certain human facial features. This robot can recognize itself when facing a mirror.
This robot was designed in order to help diagnose autism, especially in children, since it is more suited to measure the quantitative aspect of the disorder as compared to a real physician. Its creators say that the NICO robot can work more realistically, giving more options for scientists to observe how children react to this robot’s behaviour.
NICO is capable of mimicking the movement of an infant, can recognize other people, and interpret emotional tone in the human voice. It has simple hand-eye coordination and can also identify the location and the activities of the other robots near its location.
