  • Designed by Boston Dynamics, PETMAN is a modern robot that specializes in testing chemical protection clothing. The anthropomorphic robot is particularly known for its natural agile movements that help the robot simulate how protective clothing is stressed under real-life conditions.

Unlike past suit-testing technologies that relied on mechanical support and had limited motion ranges, PETMAN is able to balance itself. This allows the robot to move freely, bend, walk and even carry out a number of suit-stressing movements while being exposed to chemical warfare agents. PETMAN is also capable of simulating human physiology inside the defensive suit by monitoring and controlling temperature, sweating as well as humidity. In short, PETMAN’s main goal is to offer realistic test conditions.

Currently, the user’s test facility is carrying out several validation experiments to test the robot’s system. To ensure the program’s success, Boston Dynamics has partnered with Measurement Technologies Northwest, MRIGlobal, SRD, HHI Corporation as well as Smith Carter CUH2A.
