  • Sony unveiled its Sony Dream Robot, the QRIO in September 2003. This robot from Sony has several features, which includes voice and face recognition, the ability to avoid any obstacles, a wireless system, and stereoscopic vision.

With its pinch detection sense, which is a major breakthrough in robot tactile senses, the QRIO can sense if its finger is caught in its joints. The QRIO has visual mapping capacity and autonomous fingers that are fully functional. It can also throw a ball, which is one of its special features.

The QRIO has been installed with an advanced sense of balance, allowing this robot to navigate even on unstable surfaces. With this, the QRIO can even stand on wobbly terrain. Just like any ordinary human, the QRIO will shield itself with its arms to avoid inflicting any damages to itself, responding almost in real time.

Sadly, the QRIO’s production was stopped in 2006 after the first 100 QRIO Robots were distributed worldwide. Sony, however, dismissed the news that this robot will be phased out. The company even announced that it is further developing the production of this unique robot in order to make it available on a commercial scale by 2009.

    Features:

    • Fingers are independently functional
    • Equipped with Pinch Detection
    • Extremely advance sense of balance and stability
    • Stereoscopic vision
