Macra is a ghost-like humanoid robot created by Jouhou System Kougaku Lab (JSK) of Tokyo University.  Despite its pasty white look, the robot’s body is soft with skin that is sensitive to pressure and temperature. This sensitive skin allows the robot to detect the firmness of its grip.

It has a height of 700mm, a weight of 7.5kg, and 22 degrees of freedom.  It is equipped with multi dimensional sensors like the 3-axis force/torque sensor, the acoustic resonant tensor cell sensor and the vision-based tactile sensor.

Macra is made from molded soft polyutherine foam, making it very light. It is equipped with a USB camera, a microphone, and bothType-I and Type-II Motor Unit Smart Actuator Modules.  To ensure that temperature is monitored and controlled, 2 exhaust fans and several ventilation lines were embedded inside the exterior toe and ankle.

    Features:

    • Movability of joint: slits and hollows were added
    • Capable of crawling, rolling-over, and stepping
    • Has a forced cooling feature
    • Distributed multi-axis deformation sense
