  • Boston-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology designed an MDS robot called the NEXI. This Mobile, Dexterous, Social robot by MIT Media Lab has indeed lived up to its name.

The NEXI is truly mobile, able to move using a pair of dynamically self-balancing wheels. The arms, wrists and hands of this robot are also controllable, making it possible for NEXI to grip and lift objects skilfully.

It also has a wide array of movable features - such as eyes, eyebrows, eyelids and mouth - making it socially interactive as well. Though quite frail in appearance, this robot can lift up to five kg and can engage in peer-to-peer interaction.

MIT Media Lab’s Personal Robot Group said that this robot has been designed with the purpose of working with humans at home, interacting with them, and supporting people. The Lab is now looking forward to producing the NEXI on a commercial scale and eventually making this a personal robot.

    Features:

    • Color camera
    • Infrared systems
    • Laser rangefinder
    • Face and voice recognition
    • Self-balancing wheels
    • Microphones
