  • Bernard Smith, a former science teacher at the Hawthorn Central School in Melbourne, Australia, created a robot called Robert back in the '50s. Robert or Robbie is not an autonomous robot but has an ingenious set of adjustable spanners. Robbie can only be operated through human intervention using a control panel. It can also move its arms and hands and can even hold objects.

The image of this old robot is indistinctly human, which could be attributed to how people used to see mechanical servants of the future. Back then, this robot was powered by two 12-volt car batteries. Now it got changed to a 240 volt power supply in recent years. Using a remote controller, Robert can move backwards, sideways and forwards.

Built after World War II, this ancient robot is composed of military materials that were readily available at the time.

    Robert Features:

    • Tail wheels from Mustang Airplanes
    • 13 24V motors
    • Bomb Bay doors
    • Operating flaps
    • Built in computer
    • Remote controlled
