The RAP, short for Robotic Action Painter, is the brainchild of Leonel Moura in collaboration with IdMind.
This completely autonomous robot, developed in 2006 for the Museum of Natural History in New York, can create its own painting using its artificial intelligence algorithm. The algorithm combines initial randomness, positive feedback, and positive/negative increase of color as pheromone apparatus, which is based on the network of nine RGB sensors.
The RAP can even decide for itself when its work is already done and even signs with its unique signature at the bottom right corner of the painting. This is possible due to the “sense of rightness”, a kind of pattern recognition system embedded into this robot.
