  • South Korea’s leading manufacturer of hobby robot kits has recently launched two new DIY humanoids catering to very different markets. Robobuilder made use of their new Smart Actuator Modules, or SAMs, which are compatible with the older wCK servos, and came up with the RQ-Huno humanoid robot.

This robot is one of the two humanoids planned for launch by Robobuilder, the other of which is the RQ-Titan robot. And while RQ-HUNO is being classified by its developer as a new entry-level humanoid robot, the former is being groomed as a research platform for RobCups TeenSize League. Both of these robots were developed with the assistance of KwangWoon University and KIST.

The RQ-HUNO robot is a small humanoid kit, if not the smallest of its kind in the world today, measuring about 19 centimeters. Robovie-nano is bigger by 4 centimeters, while BeRobot is smaller by 4. Despite the minute size of the RQ-HUNO, it still has 16 degrees of freedom and packs power, thanks to the combination of the SAM-5 and SAM-3 servos installed in this robot.

It is also equipped with obstacle and sound detection sensors, allowing it to sense its environment and avoid obstacles that may be blocking its path. Although this robot is controlled solely by an Infrared remote control, it can be upgraded to Bluetooth, extending the RQ-HUNO’s capabilities further.

Making up for its size is the ARM Cortex M3 micro-controller installed in the RQ-HUNO robot. This controller is capable of storing up to 21 motions, 11 of which are pre-defined and 10 are user-defined. It can also store up to 10 autonomous behaviors.
