In 1994, JSK Laboratory of the University of Tokyo researched and worked on a tendon driven four-legged robot. Its research yielded the SQ43 robot. The scientists say that the SQ43's tendons give the robot more fluid, more flexible movement.
These tendons also give the SQ43 some unique shock absorption features. This robot is capable of navigating through small and narrow spaces, and even moves on irregular terrain and surfaces using a tendon designed to adapt to the form of a surface.
