The humanoid SIG is a joint undertaking of SGI and Kitano Symbiotic Systems Project of Japan. This robot is designed for research, with the primary purpose of serving as a platform for the integration of perceptual information geared towards the control of degrees of freedom (DOF).
SIG is built with a real-time auditory and visual tracking system. The system was in turn used by the humanoid to track multiple objects in a real-world environment. The real time tracking system of SIG utilizes a handful of technologically-advanced features, including sound source localization, face recognition, motor tracking and speaker control. Auditory and visual processing capabilities are done asynchronously on various terminals operating under the TCP/IP network.
