  • Named after a Parthian general, Surena is a humanoid robot created by the Center for Advanced Vehicles in University of Tehran in Iran and the R&D Society of Iranian Industry, Mine and Commerce. This anthropomorphic humanoid robot has 8 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) and can move based on the predetermined or predefined trajectory.

Its developer enhanced it and its design, allowing it to walk on two legs through a feedback control system that gives it a dynamic balance and yields a more human like movement. This enables the robot to stand on one leg.

Introduced in December 2008, this robot was Iran’s first humanoid that can speak predefined text. It stands at 165 cm and weighs approximately 60 Kg. The Surena, or Surena 1 after it was unveiled, has a remote control and tracking capability.

Surena 1 paved the way for numerous newer versions like Surena 2 and Surena 3. The older version was used to attract students and robotics enthusiasts, especially those who were inclined to take up a career in engineering.

    Surena Features:

    • Walks on two legs
    • Can stand on one leg
    • Remote controlled
    • Can speak predefined text
