Better known as WF-4, Waseda Flutist No. 4 was an attempt by the Waseda University of Japan to improve the expression of its flute-playing anthromorphic robot. This humanoid robot was released in 2003.

WF-4 carries various improvements that make it better than its predecessor, the WF-3RIX. One of the notable changes to the flute-playing robot is the improved mechanism of its lips, which allows the robot to control the air beam with high accuracy. There is also a noticeable improvement with the sound quality coming from the flute, without moving the flute.

The artificial lungs were also significantly improved. From the former one bellowphragm, the WF-4 has two piston cylinders. The vibrato mechanism was transferred to the rear of the neck, bringing the robot closer to the human shape. It uses the same MIDI accompaniment system used by WF-3RIX; however, it is able to collaborate with human flutists.

    Features of WF-4:

    • Improved lip mechanism
    • Improved sound quality
    • Two piston cylinder artificial lungs
    • MIDI accompaniment system
    • Able to collaborate with human flutists
